St Michael is ideal for everybody who is looking for peace and quiet and wants to experience Austria up-close. Thanks to its outstanding natural beauty and commitment to sustainable development, Lungau was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2012. It is a wonderful place to relax and let go for the whole family.

St Michael is a working Austrian village unlike some of the other ski regions of the Tryol or French Alps. It is not a man-made tourist village. Customs and traditions are cultivated and experienced. For example, the tradition of giant Samson figures carrying the 'Prangstangen' is well known beyond the local area and are part of our cultural heritage. If you come in autumn, you can experience the cattle and sheep being driven down from the pastures. But behind all this tradition, St Michael is a working village. Forestry and agriculture are important sources of income as well as ski tourism. Costumes such as Lederhosen and Dirndln are part of everyday life because they are comfortable, hard-wearing and very attractive! Locals and guests sit together at one table and enjoy reasonably-priced homemade Austrian cuisine.

The valleys of the Lungau are very natural and have a special charm. Whether you're hiking through flowers in spring, or bathing in a mountain lake close to the sky at 2,000m, you're always surrounded by fauna and flora. Or come in September/October to witness the deer rut in the Riedingtal nature park. A real natural spectacle!

In the Alps

The Alpine area is made up of several chains of mountains including Speiereck, Katschberg, Aineck, Fanningberg und Obertauern. The mountain landscape includes a wide range of different elevations and terrain, meaning there are many possibilities for skiers and hikers. There are different degrees of difficulty, from the easiest walks to hiking high in the Alpine peaks. The hikes are usually well signposted. If you would rather plan your own route we can help.
