St martin chalets location in the centre of the high lying region of Lungau is excellent, not least because it’s one of the most snow-sure AND sunny mountain ranges in Austria Brilliant Snow & more than 300km of pistes make Lungau one of the finest areas for skiing & snowboarding in the Austrian Alps! With five ski areas linked by a combination of lifts and free ski buses, you’ll do well to ski every run in Lungau within a week…it’s a challenge many of our guests can’t complete!!
Grosseck-Speiereck are our closest and favourite mountains for skiing & snowboarding, and at a height of 2,400m it’s also the highest in the region, with reliable snow and some excellent off-piste. The Sonnenbahn gondola lift station is only a short walk or if you prefer, ski bus ride from the chalets and the bus stop is right at the end of our road.
Here in Lungau we are blessed with both Austrian and English speaking ski schools and instructors. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert and whether you want to do snow plough or ski off-piste, if you’re looking for an instructor who’s fluent in English, this is the place for you! We’re especially close to the St Michael Ski School and are good friends with its founders, Karl Pelikan and Gabi Alexander. These guys will keep you and your children happy, entertained, fed and watered and above all safe, which means you can relax and enjoy your holiday while learning to ski Austrian-style, which is the best in the world!
each with its own charm and special attractions (which one will be your favourite?)
Call us or pop into reception when you arrive and we’ll talk you through the best options to suit your needs, but for now you can get an idea of prices using the Lungau tourist office’s ski pass calculator. We recommend the Lungo ski pass which covers more than 250km of piste and should give you more than enough for a week’s skiing. Children, youths, seniors and low season passes all receive a discount.
Speiereck and Grosseck Resort are our closest and favourite mountains for skiing & snowboarding, and at a height of 2,400m it’s also the highest in the region, with reliable snow and excellent snow making facilities ensure we're skiing right through until the end of the season in April. The resort has even received international rewards for its piste prepartion.
The resort can be skiied from both St Michael and Mauterndorf gondolas. We love the valley run top to bottom from Speiereck to St Michael which is over 8kms long and has an elevation differnce of over 1400 meters. Grosseck-Speiereck is a family-friendly ski area with lots of fun slopes like the witches' woods, local fabel's route or the race speed test.
Aineck has made massive investments over the recent years and boasts 3 brand new gondolas, which at last count could carry more than 24,000 people per hour. To reach Katschberg’s lifts, jump on the westbound ski bus in St Martin and get off at the top of the Katschberg pass. From here you can ski Katschberg, on one side, or Aineck on the other. Again, when snow conditions permit, you can ski down from Katschberg almost to St Michael and there’s a ski bus stop conveniently located at the bottom of the run (just head to the road and you should see it). Alternatively head over the top of Aineck and catch the bus back from St Margarethen
Fanningberg is often forgotten but don't make that mistake! With its modern heated chairlifts and long, tree-lined pistes which are often uncrowded, it's a great place for families or some of the best between the trees powder skiing, if you're lucky. Serving Fanningberg’s main run is the Zirben chairlift one of the longest 6-seater chairlifts in Austria. At 2.1km in length, 500 metres in height and carrying 100 chairs, the Samson-Bahn is named after one of Lungau’s favourite biblical heroes. The kids especially love playing and learning their first turns in the "Fanni-kinderpark".
Obertauern is perhaps the best-known ski resort in the Lungau region. It’s large, it’s high, it gets great snow, it’s popular and has the best aprés ski ( if that's your thing!!). With over 100km of runs all set in a giant natural basin, you can spend the day skiing around in a giant natural circle and never skiing the same run twice. They call this the Tauern Rund, which is unique in the whole of the Alps. You can ski both clockwise (follow the red signs) or anticlockwise (follow the green signs), eventually finishing where you started. Just as impressive, thanks to the resort’s height and geology, the Obertauern ski lifts are open from the end of November right through until the beginning of May. Did you know that Obertauern is where the Beatles filmed "Help" back in 1965!?
Ski with us in our holiday region Salzburger-Lungau! We plan a winter activity program each season especially for our st martin chalet guests because we really would hate you to miss out on all the fun snow activities avialable!
What is there not to like? 5* accommodation, great hosts and more things to do than you can shake a stick at. Currently sitting in the Panorama Alm drinking coffee whilst brushing the fresh powder off the jacket.

The greatest place for an action packed holiday
The greatest place for an action packed holiday, just to chill out or anything in between. So much to do in beautifull surroundings.

Once you are in, you never want out
There is one problem with a St Martin chalet, once you are in, you never want out. Life is so easy with the food delivered, restaurants taken care of and in case you run out of wine a handy racks full at the reception. The comforts of your own home, the family around you, the amazing food of Lungau region, the laid back atmosphere and the magic scenery. We went twice and we are looking to return again and again and again.

Now, I have added another thing to my Bucket List: returning to st martin chalets!
I planned for almost a year to find the perfect place to complete the #1 item on my Bucket List. I had aspired to dive in the GrunerSee. st martin chalets made it come true. They were able to do anything that I needed or wanted. When I arrived, they had already contacted a divemaster for me (Leo Maierhuber was wonderful). The area is beautiful and the staff is wonderful. Now, I have added another thing to my Bucket List: returning to st martin chalets!
