Just minutes from our chalets, the village of St Michael im Lungau upholds some of the most fantastic Austrian Christmas traditions that have been lost elsewhere in Austria. A real highlight is the St Michael Christkindl Advent Market ‘Adventzauber’ which is a major event for the local community and it is open each advent weekend leading up to the big day. It’s everything you’d hope for in traditional Austrian Christmas experience, surrounded by snow topped mountains and wonderfully friendly locals!
You will certainly have heard of the world’s most famous carols ‘Silent Night’ or “Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!” It was first performed by the song’s author Josef Mohr who lived in the small Lungau parish of Mariapfarr and its composer Franz Gruber in Oberndorf’s village church in 1818, now known as the “Silent Night” Chapel. There is a wonderful little silent night museum in Mariapfarr which is well worth the visit.
This is another fantastic christmassy event at the nearby historical town of Mauterndorf, featuring lots of family friendly activities and festive fun, all set inside this amazing Medieval ‘toll’ castle located on a rocky cliff and dominates the town.
How about a snowy steam train ride you’ll never forget on the highest-narrow-gauge railway in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburg’s Lungau?! It takes you from Murau to Tamsweg and is certainly a unique experience, especially in the snow!
This is an amazing festive event, where St Nicholas visits the houses of the village’s children who explain how good they’ve been and hopefully secure themselves some nice gifts. But, for the naughty ones a dramatic and somewhat scary mythical creature called Krampus also accompanies St Nicholas to warn and usually punish them. It’s not for the faint hearted!
Feel the true spirit of Christmas time and stroll along the romantically latern lit winter hiking trail on Katschberg. Lined with delightful displays such as the forest of lights, the Christmas maze, the living nativity scene with sheep and ponies. Browse around the souvenir and handicraft huts with all sorts of handmade and self-carved items and warm yorselves with a mug of fragrant herb tea or Glühwein along the way
So, with the snow arriving earlier year on year, Christmas really is the time to visit and our little part of the world here in the Austrian region of Lungau.
