Skiing
Ski Holidays in St Michael im Lungau
The skiing in St Michael im Lungau is excellent, not least because it's one of the most snow-sure mountain ranges in Austria. Why? Well, it's a complicated mixture of factors but all we know is that we get our snow from both the north and the south, which apparently is quite unusual! The local mountains are also well equipped with snow cannons, which means you can ski down to the base of the valley more or less all year round.
As well as reliable snow conditions, we've also got a great mixture of runs - with skiing for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers. Aside from the specialist beginners slopes (some of which are isolated, so you won't have faster skiers bombing past you!), most of the runs in the resorts are blue and red. For those looking for a greater challenge, there are a number of easy-to-reach blacks and there's plenty of monitored off-piste and ski routes. For those looking for something a little more challenging, Herby regularly leads guests on a morning or afternoon of 'steep and deep'. He's a qualified mountain rescue guide and skiing instructor, so you'll be in good hands.
With five different ski areas, all interconnected by a combination of lifts and regular ski buses, you'd do well to ski every run within a week (go on, it's a challenge!!). The ski bus leaves from right outside the chalets, which is nice, although you can also walk to the main St Michael lift in less than five minutes.
