Sightseeing in Lungau: wellness, sport, culture, good food and relaxation
St Martin is a small hamlet belonging to the town of St Michael in the Lungau region of Austria. It’s about one hour’s drive south of Salzburg via the A10 dual carriageway (easy for airport transfers and comfortably close enough for a day trip) and only an hour north of Klagenfurt Airport and the borders with both Italy and Slovenia. If you’re coming in the summer, it’s a great base for some European touring and the roads are excellent (especially for keen drivers, cylists and bikers).
The alpine area consists of several different mountains, all joined up by a common lift pass. Some of these mountains are small and some much larger, meaning there are plenty of options available to skiers and hikers of all abilities. One of Lungau’s great strengths is its variety.
The resort is ideal for families and perhaps best suited to those looking to escape the crowds, or seeking a more genuine, healthy Austrian adventure. Having said that, we have several groups of twenty-somethings (and wannabe twenty-somethings!) who always party quite hard and who keep coming back for more! Whatever your circumstances, you’ll find that St Michael has a lot to offer.
One thing Austrians are particularly proud of is the quality of their cooking and Lungau is no exception. Our restaurants still specialise in serving local dishes (although pizzas and steaks are easy to find) and there are plenty of local delicacies to be discovered. Any one of the mountain huts or local restaurants will offer you traditional "gröstl" or "knödl", which you just have to try, and local farms and producers make some incredible cheeses, cured meats and, believe it or not, wine. You don’t often find Austrian wine labels back home, but there are some really special ones, as well as some great local beers and schnapps! We regularly organise tours of the local farm shops or mountain huts and we’ll arrange for someone to collect you, if you can’t make it back alone!
You'll also find that Lungau is packed full of history and culture and, if you time your trip right, you may well find yourself wandering through traditional Christmas markets or being invited to the parties and festivities of the moment. Don’t worry, you won’t be made to wear Lederhosen – but the chance is probably there for those who want it!
