Spring skiing and crashing off piste

On our most recent trip to St Martin Chalets, we were lucky enough to do some off-piste training with Herby. We teamed up with three Dutch guests - Wouter, Jur and Peter - and had a truly memorable day... and a number of wipe outs!

Not only did we all learn a lot about skiing in heavy powder, we were all really interested in Herby's avalanche training. It's clear that it's never 100% safe to venture off piste, but if you're like me and love skiing in deep snow, it's great to have a basic understanding of the risks, what to look out for and how to dig a snow profile. We made a couple of videos of our trip, which Jodi is going to share on the St Martin Chalets blog. We hope you enjoy them!

Steep and Deep with Herby

Guided skiing off piste in Austria's Lungau region

Each week during the winter season, our guests have a chance to go 'steep and deep' with Herby. It's a complimentary guiding service we offer to anyone staying at St Martin Chalets. Herby is a qualified skiing instructor and mountain rescuer - a "Hundführer" in fact (our black lab Jimbo is a trained mountain rescue dog) - so our guests are in good hands. They usually learn a thing or two about avalanches and the risks of skiing off piste too.

Here's a video from the 19th March. You can see one of our guests, a lovely Swedish lady called Anna Nilsson, bravely leading Herby down Grundleiten - St Michael's best loved off-piste bowl (perhaps not least because it's so easily accessible by chairlift!). The snow was pretty sticky that day - not easy - but everyone who went along enjoyed the day (or so they said!) and Herby tells me they all showed a marked improvement!

...There's only one way to learn to ski off piste, and that's just to get stuck in and try it!

Energy Days!

Come for a look around St Martin Chalets eco-chalet resort in April

EUSEW Energy Days in Austria 2011

If any of you are interested in looking at what we've done here at St Martin Chalets, we're holding an official Open Weekend in April. We'll be serving up some local goodies, while our visitors can do the following:

  • Tour of the resort and chalets
  • Explanation and demonstration of our CHP(combined heat & power) plant oil heating system and photovoltaic plant
  • Introduction to efficient recycling
  • See how a chalet is built from inside out (two chalets are currently being erected) with emphasis on the sheep’s wool insulation and natural local materials
  • Trial runs on various e-mobiles (including bikes, scooters, cars…)
  • Regional bio farm products for tasting
  • Introduction of the proposed Lungau Biosphere Park (UNESCO)

Have a look at the following link and click on Austria for more details: http://www.eusew.eu/energy-days-europe. We'll hope to see some of you there!
