Speiereck / Grosseck ski area - "our mountain"!
The main ski lift up from St Michael im Lungau to slopes of Speiereck and Grosseck is only a five-minute walk from the chalets but, if you're feeling lazy, you can also jump onto the ski bus. The bus stop is only 300 metres from the St Martin Chalets entrance and goes directly to the Speiereck lift and then on to Katschberg. In the other direction you can head to Mauterndorf, St Margarethen (and the Aineck lifts), Fanningberg and the Obertauern ski resort.
Speiereck itself is 2400 metres above sea level and extremely reliable for snow. Served by a covered 4-man chairlift the main run is red, which then splits into a combination of red, blue and black runs, as well as providing access to acres of of-piste. If deep snow is your thing, the mountain can be skied in three different directions - down the back side towards Mauterndorf via the Restalm ski-route, into the large Grundleiten bowl, which you can check out from the lift on your way up, and over the front side towards St Michael where, in the right conditions, it's possible to ski all the way back to St Martin.
If you'd rather stick to the piste, from the top of Speiereck it's possible to ski either back to St Michael via a long windy blue run, or down one of the selection of blues and red to Mauternorf. From Mauterndorf you can continue on to ski in Obertauern, which is only a ten-minute bus ride away, or make the short hop to Fanningberg or St Margarethen.
For parents, Speiereck is a great option. There's enough skiing and variety to keep even the fastest and most adventurous skiers entertained, and yet it's a small enough ski area that you can always feel comfortable, knowing that your little skiers will never be too far away.
