Après Ski
Night Life in St Michael
St Michael isn’t known for its après-ski but it’s definitely there if you want it! There are plenty of lively bars and restaurants at the bottom of the slopes but, in St Michael itself, you’re more likely to find a nice Austrian restaurant than people dancing on the tables. If you fancy a blow out, we can easily point you in the direction of some great party venues, for instance…
Up on Katschberg – our nearest mountain other than Speiereck – there are some great après-ski bars. Right across Austria, après-ski celebrations tend to start as soon as the lifts close (around 4pm) and usually go on into the early hours. Afterwards throughout most of the winter or, if you’re feeling a little unsteady, there are regular ski buses and taxis. If you’re happy catching a bus back, you should definitely check out Obertauern’s legendary Lürzer Alm. Did you know the Beatles made their 1965 film, Help, in Obertauern?
St Michael itself is definitely more than just a ski resort. The town is as busy in the summer as it is in the winter and there’s usually a fairly balanced mix of locals and tourists. St Michael’s inhabitants are only too aware of the importance of Lungau’s tourism and you’ll find them extremely welcoming and friendly. Even the local teenagers will smile and say hello as you pass them in the street – something you don’t get very often elsewhere! By the way, don’t worry if your German isn’t great: most people speak English, although they’ll love you if you try to speak German!
